Optimizing for AI Search Engines and Featured Answers
Search is no longer only a list of blue links. AI overviews and answer engines increasingly read your page and synthesize a direct answer, sometimes without sending the click. Writing so that machines can extract and cite you is a new, learnable skill on top of classic SEO.
Write to be extracted
- Answer the core question clearly and early, then expand. Do not bury the lede.
- Use plain question-and-answer structure and descriptive headings.
- State facts in self-contained sentences a machine can lift without context.
Structure helps both audiences
A page that is easy for an answer engine to parse is usually easy for a human to skim. Clear headings, short direct answers, and a real FAQ serve readers and AI surfaces at the same time.
The defensible advantage is still original substance: data, experience, and a point of view a summarizer cannot generate on its own. Make your page the source worth citing, not a paraphrase of pages that already exist.
